In the 1980s, Penn began an unusually fertile long-distance collaboration with Issey Miyake. Every year the Japanese designer sent his inventions to the photographer, whom he revered. And Penn, inspired by the novelty and structural virtuosity of Miyake’s art, riffed a series of equally astounding responses in return. The two artists enjoyed this lively creative matchup for fourteen years (1986–99), resulting in the creation of a handful of brilliant books like this one.
