FENSTER ZUR WALL STREET (DIRTY WINDOWS) (1995)
FENSTER ZUR WALL STREET (DIRTY WINDOWS) (1995)
This highly acclaimed book of photographs depicting a way of life photographer Merry Alpern uncovered and then documented in the winter of 1993-4. From an open window of her friend's apartment in Wall Street, she photographed the two tiny windows of an after-hours sex club opposite. Alpern's theme of voyeurism creates a beautiful and disturbing series that explores the relationship between men and women. This book and the work itself, similar to Eric Kroll's Sex Objects was criticised by US Congress and put a strain on The National Endowment of the Arts, in turn catapulting this book to cult status and gaining it the recognition it deserves for its unique approach to photography.
