The 1977 first edition of Russian Self-Portraits. In the 50s the Americans would host Cultural exchange programmes ranging from technology to art with former or current communist countries like Russia. The photography exhibition where this series was created was in Kiev, the future capital of Ukraine following their independence in 1991. The brilliant self-captured portraits in this book show a connection through photography that was difficult at the time due to social, political and economic differences between the countries. The American photographer and the Russian people who attended the exhibition could connect through the process and the images like they hadn't been able to before. The resulting images are brilliant.
